Building permits in the Town of Clay

The Town of Clay requires a building permit from the town before any work that must conform to the Uniform Code, the Energy Code and the Town Code. The rules are in chapter 80 of the town code, adopted in 2022, and permit, certificate and inspection fees are set by Town Board resolution, with chapter 105 holding the fee provisions (Town of Clay code, chapter 80). A home addition is new construction under the Uniform Code, so it is one of the projects these rules cover.

The town rules apply outside incorporated villages. Part of the Village of North Syracuse lies in Clay, and that village administers its own permits. Across the town as a whole, villages included, the median home was built in 1978 (margin of error 1 year) and 68 percent (margin of error 2 percentage points) of the 26,282 housing units are single-family detached (American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates).
