Permits for renovation work in the City of Syracuse
In the City of Syracuse, permits must be obtained before construction starts. The city’s residential permit list covers one- and two-family homes; larger buildings go through a commercial submission and review. Heating, electrical, fire alarm and sprinkler work need their own trade permits, and plumbing permits for Syracuse projects come from Onondaga County, so a bathroom remodel that adds, replaces or relocates piping is permitted through the county. Every construction permit ends with an inspection after the work, scheduled with the Division of Code Enforcement, and the work must be completed within one year of the permit’s issue. Requirements for a specific project come from the city’s Central Permit Office.
The median home in the city was built in 1948 (American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates, margin of error 2 years), and about 27 percent (margin of error 2 percentage points) of its 67,601 housing units are in buildings with two to four units. Anyone renovating an older home of one or two units follows the residential permit and inspection steps above.
SAP Construction’s work in the city includes James Revival on James St. and Standish & Stone on Standish Dr.; both are shown with our Syracuse projects.
