When the Town of Geddes requires a building permit

The Town of Geddes code requires a separate building permit from the Code Enforcement Officer before anyone erects, enlarges, alters or improves a building. Ordinary repairs that are not structural are the exception (Town of Geddes code), so enlarging a home needs a permit while a non-structural repair does not.

The town rule applies outside the Village of Solvay, which runs its own code enforcement office. In the town as a whole, Solvay included, the median home was built in 1955 (margin of error 2 years) and about 13 percent (margin of error 3 percentage points) of the 7,615 housing units are in buildings with two to four units (American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates).
