Building permits from the Village of Solvay
Solvay is an incorporated village inside the Town of Geddes, and its Code Enforcement Office at Village Hall, 1100 Woods Road, handles building permits, zoning compliance, fire inspections and rental inspections (village Code Enforcement page). The village’s permit instructions say no work may start before the permit is issued and that a building permit is valid for one year from issuance.
An application asks for a parcel survey from the last seven years with the new work drawn on it, plans by a New York State certified design professional for projects that need them, and asbestos survey results when state Department of Labor rule 56 requires a survey (Solvay building permit instructions). The Town of Geddes permit rule does not apply inside the village.
The median Solvay home was built in 1947 (margin of error 6 years), and about 27 percent (margin of error 6 percentage points) of the village’s 3,292 housing units are in buildings with two to four units (American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates), which is useful context for anyone planning a renovation there.
