Most basement office work is comfortable on standard 120V circuits with dedicated 20-amp service. The 240V conversation begins when equipment loads exceed 1800 watts continuous (the practical 80 percent limit on a 20-amp 120V circuit), when you have multiple high-draw devices on the same workspace, or when the equipment itself is spec’d for 240V (most precision shop tools and high-end studio rackmount gear).

Planning the Service Run

A dedicated 240V circuit run from the main panel to the basement office involves three planning decisions. Panel capacity (does the existing service have enough headroom for the additional circuit). Wire gauge and breaker sizing (10-gauge wire and 30-amp breaker for a typical 240V office circuit). Routing path (clean run from panel to the new outlet, avoiding existing finished spaces where possible). Each decision affects cost and complexity.
